Among the most common and traditionally popular means of disinfestation are all kinds of powders from cockroaches - they are easy to use, are mostly inexpensive and in practice, when properly applied, do show high efficiency.
One of the first representatives of powdered insecticides was the dust (DDT, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) - the older generation remembers it well, since the dust was widely used not only in agriculture, but also in everyday life, to combat cockroaches, domestic ants and even lice. And the remedy was really killer, at least, the cockroaches DDT mowed cleaned up (that's just not infrequently the drug led to poisoning and the tenants themselves, because it was very toxic).
Below in the photo - the same legendary dust that is now on sale is no longer to be found:
Also boric acid (the so-called boric powder) was also widely used from cockroaches: its mixture with egg yolk is a classic folk recipe for cockroaches, which is still used today, and it is not unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, progress did not stand still, and today a large number of other powders from cockroaches, no less effective, but much safer in handling than dust, and operating at a lower concentration than boron powder, appeared on the market. Interestingly, in the people practically any powder from insects is still often called dust, although, of course, modern means have no relation to DDT, and the active substances in them are completely different (we'll talk about them a little later).
So, let's see what insecticidal powders are the most popular today for the destruction of cockroaches, and also try to figure out how to properly use such tools to get the maximum effect and permanently forget about the pests in the house.
And let's start, perhaps, with exotic - from the so-called "tire powder" - its specificity is that many have heard of its extremely high efficiency against cockroaches, but do not quite imagine what kind of substance it is, where to buy it, and in general , why some people call it tire powder, and others - cable ...
Tinned powder from cockroaches (he is also a tiuram, he is also a cable powder)
Perhaps, the first (and most importantly) that you should know here: bus barrel, or cable powder, is the common name of technical thiuram (tetramethylthiuram disulfide, otherwise Tiuram D, Tiram or TMTD). The main area of application of this chemical is the rubber industry, where tiuram is used as a vulcanization accelerator.
Actually, for the reason that tiuram is used for the production of rubber, it is commonly called tire or cable powder.
On a note
Thus, a tire powder is not a powdered tire from a car, as is sometimes thought. Tiuri is an individual chemical substance, and is a white or gray crystalline powder, practically odorless.
In tiuram, fungicidal properties were found - methods for using this substance in combating fungi were developed, as well as for baiting rodents.
In addition, tire powder has insecticidal properties and, in particular, helps to get rid of cockroaches, and, judging by the reviews, the tool works much more efficiently than even the old time-proven boric acid. Meanwhile, specialists in the field of insect control (pest control) widely do not use cable powder.
Another nuance of the use of tiuram is that it is difficult to buy. In markets and in ordinary hardware stores, it is not for sale. Tiuri are sometimes used in tire shops, as well as in tire factories - it is here that you can try to find and buy this powder. Also it can be purchased:
- in online stores as a chemical reagent;
- in fine packing as "Cable powder";
- in packages of 1 kg called "Tiram".
"There was an experience of using tiuram. Chemistry is terrible, about 30 years ago, parents poisoned them with cockroaches. They say, then they went straight down the placers of these reptiles, crunched under their feet. But then he was not selling anywhere, his father worked in a tire factory and was able to get it. And now there is no such opportunity, so I'm looking for where this powder can be bought. It is painfully good, after all useless dichlophos, gels of housekeepers, combat traps and other shop-work nonsense, I count only on him ... "
It should be borne in mind that tiuram is toxic to humans and pets. Therefore, even if it is possible to get this "tire powder" somewhere, it is necessary to apply it in everyday conditions carefully, excluding the possibility of contact with children and pets.
Tiuri has a so-called intestinal poisoning effect on cockroaches, that is, a cockroach must eat a substance to poison itself. In this respect, the substance in many ways resembles boric acid, which, unlike modern insecticides, also does not have a contact poisoning effect, but exerts its poisonous effect only when it is eaten by an insect.
Old good boric acid
Boric acid (otherwise called boron powder) is a much more popular and well-known remedy for cockroaches than tiuram. It is very toxic for most insects, and with proper application it can take cockroaches out of the house in just two weeks.
Boric acid as an insecticide can be used in two ways:
- Powder is poured in paths where cockroaches are likely to run through it, or in the middle of a bunch of boric acid, just put a small bait (bread, egg, onions). The bottom line is to make the cockroaches mess in boron powder. When insects begin to clean their paws and tendrils, they certainly swallow a few grains of the remedy;
- Either boron powder is added to the food bait, and cockroaches simply eat it. Traditionally, recipes for such baits involve mixing boric acid with boiled egg (yolk), with mashed potatoes, with a dough, but, in principle, you can knead powder in anything that will eat cockroaches. From the resulting mixture roll balls, which are then laid out in different places of the apartment. Gradually cockroaches find them, eagerly eat and poison.
"My mother and I poisoned the cockroaches with boric acid. They got us incredibly! We bought 4 sachets in a pharmacy for 10 grams, they cost 40 rubles each. Boiled hard-boiled two eggs and mix well the powder of boric acid with yolks. Then they rolled small balls, they were laid out in different places in the kitchen, especially under the sink, where these creatures constantly creep. Cockroaches simply pounced on this treat, it seemed that the whole kitchen is chomping. Somewhere in 5 days they became much less, they began to hunt. Boric acid for them is a poison of delayed action. Then a few days later they swept away the corpse, but now everything is clean, even from the neighbors do not come. "
Boric acid is good for its wide availability, complete absence of odor and relative safety for humans (moderately toxic, allergic reactions are rare, previously even used to disinfect wounds). You can buy it in almost any pharmacy.
On a note
Instead of boric acid, borax (sodium salt of boric acid, which also is a white crystalline powder) can also be used to hunt cockroaches with the same success.
Another important point, which is not all taken into account when applying boric acid in practice: in the room, for at least some time there should not be readily available sources of water, as cockroaches poisoned with boric acid can drink, which significantly reduces the effectiveness of the method.
Insecticide powder Ecokiller (based on diatomite)
Generally speaking, the EkoKiller product stands somewhat apart from most other insecticidal powders due to the specific mechanism of action on insects. While other powders somehow cause poisoning of cockroaches, Ecokiller acts quite differently.
The basis of the drug is a specially treated diatomite, also called a mountain flour - a cream-colored mineral powder, the particles of which have a pronounced abrasive action (mainly composed of silica) and have high absorbing properties (in particular, actively absorbing moisture from the outside). Contact of the cockroach with the powder of the EkoKiller preparation leads to damage to the protective layer on the outer covers of the insect body (cuticle) and, as a consequence, rapid loss of liquid by its body. And since the cockroach can not get rid of the powder attached to its body, there is practically no chance to survive.
Below the photograph shows how the particles of diatomite look under the microscope:
As practice shows, if you use EkoKiller instructions, you can get rid of cockroaches in about 2-3 weeks, and even in the most neglected cases, when the apartment is literally teeming with pests, as well as in those difficult situations when the cockroach population has resistance to " chemistry "(permetrin, carbofos, etc.)
On a note
EkoKiller is also remarkable for its ability to fight insects that do not eat any baits at all. In particular, just like cockroaches, EkoKiller powder can poison bugs and fleas that feed on blood only, it can also be used to destroy moths and pests in the garden.
In general, virtually any effective insecticide powder is universal enough, and its scope is not limited only to fighting cockroaches.
It is also important that Ecokiller, in contrast to preparations based on traditional insecticides, is highly safe for humans and domestic animals. Physically, it is somewhat like chalk - so inert that even if a cat or a child accidentally gets dirty in it, it will not have any consequences for their health (which can not be said about preparations based on pyrethroids and organophosphate insecticides).
Means against cockroaches Front Line M
Powder of the Belarusian production Front Line M is a typical insecticidal agent of nerve agent. As active ingredients, the drug contains fipronil and methoprene - two substances that exert an acute contact and intestinal effect on cockroaches.
If the insect runs through the powder, or the agent enters the digestive tract (not important, when cleaning the legs or eating the bait with Front Line), the active substances penetrate the body, lead to poisoning and rapid death of the insect.
On a note
Front Line M and similar powders are commonly referred to as dusts, as well as powders or powders. As mentioned above, these drugs do not have any relation to the true dust (DDT).
The composition of phenaxine includes the insecticide fenvalerate and the above mentioned boric acid. Due to this, the drug has on the insects both nerve-paralytic and acute intestinal action.
The powder is inexpensive, the packing for 125 grams of phenaxine costs about 40 rubles, and one such sachet is enough for hawking cockroaches in a room of about 30 square meters. m.
The drug is used, first of all, in places of congestion of cockroaches, and also on ways of their possible moving. In particular, the powder is treated with cracks in the walls and floor, crevices along the plinths, openings in the places of entry of water, heating and sewer pipes into the apartment, as well as the back walls of furniture (especially in the kitchen).
For the destruction of cockroaches it is Fenaksin, not Fenaksin-Plus. The second drug is not a powder, but special granules used in agriculture to destroy the bear.
"We tried, probably, with a dozen different means ... Somehow the Regent helped, but not for long. Still somewhere half a year ago it was possible to get rid of cockroaches more or less when we bought some Chinese powder, but now we do not have it, our relatives buy it only in Moscow. At us in the panel house cockroaches live everywhere, on an apartment walk, as on a boulevard. Recently vytravili Phenaxin, a few weeks have passed since then, until it is clean, no new cockroach. The bad news is that the powder stinks, it is desirable to disperse it when you are going somewhere ... "
Insecticides Super Fas and Fas Double
Despite the similar names, these funds have different composition:
- Super Fas as an active ingredient contains insecticides thiamethoxam (4%) and zeta-cypermethrin (1%). Sold as a water-soluble powder, and in the form of tablets;
- In Fas-Double, the active ingredients are zeta-cypermethrin, es-fenvalerate and piperonyl butoxide. Form release - powder from light gray to light brown color.
Super Fas is used to prepare a 1% solution and then apply it in places of congestion and movement of cockroaches (the rate of consumption is 50-100 ml per square meter). Fas-Double is applied directly in the form of a powder - in the control of cockroaches, a consumption rate of 2 grams per square meter of area is used.
In this case, the effect of both agents on cockroaches is approximately the same: the components of the preparations when ingested into an insect organism lead to disturbances in the work of the nervous system, paralysis and rapid death. Both agents have a contact and intestinal poisoning effect.
The price of Super Fas powder is approximately 80 rubles per package for 10 grams. A bag of Fas-Double for 125 grams costs about 70 rubles.
"Our neighbors are drunkards from the bottom, they constantly cockroaches in crowds of twigs. Before that, we lived with cockroaches for 5 years, nowhere to go. What just did not try, and traps all sorts, and crayons, and sprayers. And only two years ago they found the right remedy. Powder Fas helped us - a very effective remedy, it is also used from Colorado beetles. We coped 100%, almost 2 years already we do not remember cockroaches. We worked the whole apartment with Fas, then we did some repairs. No more cockroaches! "
Dost from cockroaches Clean House
Powdered insecticide Clean House contains in its composition two highly effective insecticides, which have a nerve-paralyzing effect on cockroaches - tetramethrin and cypermethrin.
The Clean House is used as a dummy as a similar remedy, and if the instructions for use are followed, then the result is manifested after a couple of days and is quite well pronounced (many dead cockroaches on the floor). The drug allows you to get rid of not only from cockroaches, but also from house ants, lice, fleas, scales, and with a certain zeal - even from bed bugs.
Pyrethrum is another specific powder used to control cockroaches. It is interesting because it consists of dried and shredded flowers of Dalmatian chamomile - a flower that includes natural insecticides from the class of pyrethrins. Pyrethrins were used to fight insects until the industry established the production of their synthetic analogs - pyrethroids.
The second name for the pyrethrum powder is Persian powder.
It is believed that synthetic pyrethroids as insecticides are more effective than pyrethrins, that is, they have a more pronounced nerve-paralytic effect on insects. At the same time, pyrethrins are safer for humans and pets, and therefore Pyrethrum powder is used not only against cockroaches in living quarters, but also to fight, for example, withers, mites and fleas in cats and dogs.
The price of Pyrethrum powder is about 500 rubles per packing for 300 grams.
General rules for the use of insecticidal powders in the control of cockroaches
The vast majority of commercially available insecticidal powders in their composition and action on cockroaches are similar in many respects: for example, the above-mentioned Khalek, Biotsifen, Green House and some others contain all the same pyrethroids and poison cockroaches due to contact and intestinal action.
When buying this or that product, it is important not to confuse the powders ready for use with the powders intended for dissolution in water - the second ones are much more concentrated, somewhat more complicated to use and are used to disinfect the room by spraying the prepared solution. Such water-soluble powders include the above mentioned Super Fas preparation, as well as Tarax, Iskra, Atlant, Super Attack and some others.
Be that as it may, before using any insecticide, you should always read the instructions for using the drug and observe basic safety rules (for example, use a respirator and rubber gloves when working).
On a note
Specialists of SES and private disinfestation services often combine different types of means - for example, spray the preparation prepared from the emulsion concentrate, and in addition apply still treatment with a powdered insecticide (this is especially important in the treatment of fleet cellars). A competent combination of several agents gives a more pronounced and lasting effect than the use of a single drug.
In general, the task of applying powdered insecticides is to make the cockroaches run through the scattered powder. This is achieved in two ways:
- Powder is simply poured wherever cockroaches regularly and often happen, in the calculation that insects themselves get dirty in the remedy;
- Or cockroaches are attracted to a special tray or a box of powder.
The simplest is the first method, although it is usually undesirable to use it in those rooms where children and pets live, and where there is a risk of spreading funds throughout the apartment. For maximum effect, the powder is poured near the trash can, around the sink, along the skirting boards, behind the stove (this is the favorite place for the cockroaches) and behind the fridge. The longer the remedy will be here, the more cockroaches in it will be dirty.
As for special trays with powder (a kind of bait stations), they are usually used as follows:
- Take a suitable box with small holes, through which only cockroaches can get inside - so limited access to the poison of domestic animals;
- Inside such a box a thin layer of insecticide powder is poured, bait is put on it - a piece of apple, sausage, onion, bread, oatmeal, banana;
- The whole construction (and, better, several constructions at once) is established where the cockroaches are most likely to find it;
- Attracted by the smell of bait cockroaches (as well as ants, scales and lice) run through the powder, get dirty in it and soon perish.
Practice shows that closed boxes with insecticidal powder inside are much safer for the sanitary condition of the room, rather than just scattered in the corners of the apartment poison.
If you have ever used a powdered means to kill cockroaches - be sure to share your experience, leaving a review at the bottom of this page.
